Looking Back on 2007 in Sun Valley

Castle Rock Fire in Warm Springs
It was a big year for Sun Valley and a big year for Plum. In the late spring Plum TV found a new home in Hailey. We started off the summer with a bang launching live programming like the MorningNoon&Night Show and covering spectacular Sun Valley events. We had the Food & Wine Festival with author and food connoisseur Jim Harrison. We interviewed health gurus at the Wellness Festival, danced and sang with Jonny Lang at River Run Lodge and toasted to the arts at the Sun Valley Wine Auction. It was a blast.

Learn to Meditate in 2008

People in our Valley aren’t very good at just sitting around. Valley resident Valerie Skonie wants to help us. So she has organized Sun Valley’s first ever Winter Feast for the Soul, a 40-day interfaith communal spiritual journey, and she wants us all to try setting aside 40 calming minutes a day – to feed our souls.

Ski Rotarun

This Christmas, the Wood River Valley got quite a lovely gift: the opening of Rotarun ski area. Locted west of Hailey in Croy Canyon, Rotarun will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Starting January 9th be ready for night skiing every Wednesday from 6-9p.m. with day skiing on Saturdays and Sundays. Grab your friends and head down to Hailey for some ski time fun.

Take a Trip to Galena

Emily at Galena
The holidays in Sun Valley are a blast. The mountain is open, and the snow is falling, we hope. And, there are more events than you can count, much less attend. That being said, sometimes you need a break from small town life, a little escape into the great wide open. Our suggestion: a day trip to Galena Lodge, 23 miles north of Ketchum where you can snowshoe, Nordic ski, and fuel yourself with hearty winter food.

Nordic skiing at Galena is a must. The lodge has access to the entire 130 kilometers of Nordic trails in the north valley. The trails are so extensive and diverse that Snow Country magazine described them as “arguably the best in the United States,” not too shabby. Even if you have never Nordic skied before, Galena is the perfect place to learn. There are beginner classes, ski clinics as well as intense race instruction.

If strapping into skis doesn’t suit you, try snowshoeing. There are easy, dog friendly trails like Cowboy Cabin Trail, or you can push yourself and tackle Pioneer Cemetery Loop or Psycho Adventure. Enjoy a good workout and incredible views of the surrounding snow covered Sawtooth Mountains and meadows. Although the trail names sound somewhat frightening, they are actually quite the opposite.

To get out of dodge for longer than an afternoon, rent a yurt. A short snowshoe or ski or brings you to one of Galena’s Mongolian style yurts. Each yurt is furnished with a cozy wood stove, lanterns, cooking facilities and beds. You can cook or have food from the lodge delivered straight to your door.

Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and yurt camping are just a few of the outdoor adventures Galena Lodge offers this winter. To find out more, check out Galena Lodge or call 208-726-4010.

Shopping Around: Men's Holiday Wear

Main Street in Hailey
They may hate to admit it, but men do actually like shopping for clothes. And, Sun Valley has great stores for men’s clothing. With New Year’s Eve coming up, this is a great time for the guys to find some good dress up clothes. Here are some of the choice items that we found while shopping around in Sun Valley.
