The holidays in Sun Valley are a blast. The mountain is open, and the snow is falling, we hope. And, there are more events than you can count, much less attend. That being said, sometimes you need a break from small town life, a little escape into the great wide open. Our suggestion: a day trip to
Galena Lodge, 23 miles north of Ketchum where you can snowshoe, Nordic ski, and fuel yourself with hearty winter food.
Nordic skiing at Galena is a must. The lodge has access to the entire 130 kilometers of Nordic trails in the north valley. The trails are so extensive and diverse that
Snow Country magazine described them as “arguably the best in the United States,” not too shabby. Even if you have never Nordic skied before, Galena is the perfect place to learn. There are beginner classes, ski clinics as well as intense race instruction.
If strapping into skis doesn’t suit you, try
snowshoeing. There are easy, dog friendly trails like Cowboy Cabin Trail, or you can push yourself and tackle Pioneer Cemetery Loop or Psycho Adventure. Enjoy a good workout and incredible views of the surrounding snow covered Sawtooth Mountains and meadows. Although the trail names sound somewhat frightening, they are actually quite the opposite.
To get out of dodge for longer than an afternoon, rent a
yurt. A short snowshoe or ski or brings you to one of Galena’s Mongolian style yurts. Each yurt is furnished with a cozy wood stove, lanterns, cooking facilities and beds. You can cook or have food from the lodge delivered straight to your door.
Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and yurt camping are just a few of the outdoor adventures Galena Lodge offers this winter. To find out more, check out
