snowPRO: Chase Josey

Chase Catches Air

At the young age of 12, Hailey native Chase Josey is one amazing snowboarder. A member of the Sun Valley snowboard team since he was 8, Chase just finished 10th in the Junior Jam Halfpipe event at the 2008 US Snowboarding Open in Stratton, Vermont. Up against a tough international field Chase managed to make finals after some early trouble in the qualifying rounds. Coach Josh Keefer accompanied Chase and here is what Keefer had to say.

Spring Time and the Skiing is Good

Spring on Bald Mountain
Thursday, March 20 was the first official day of spring. We’ve all noticed it. The sun stays out later. The air is a bit warmer. And, the snow, at least when there aren’t midnight flurries, is starting to melt off the ground.

Yet the start of spring does not mean that ski season has entirely come to an end. (Phew.) In fact, with our epic snowfall this year, we can expect to have wonderful spring ski conditions. Plum sat down with Travis Will, Training Director of the Sun Valley Ski School, to get the scoop on mountain conditions and how we can all enjoy spring skiing to the fullest.

Will contends we have ample coverage on the mountain with soft spring snow already on the southern slopes. The northern slopes have not had as much sun and therefore the snow is much harder and more winter-like. That being said, one can’t really go wrong; the snow is good just about everywhere.

According to Will, what matters is the time you choose to go skiing on a given day. With last week’s light snow and rain, there is good spring skiing just about every hour of the day. “From when the lifts open at 9am until they close at 4pm, it is just great skiing. You can’t go wrong,” says Will. “As we move into the freeze/thaw cycle, where the cold temperatures at night cause the softening snow to harden, good skiing will shift to later in the day when the sun has had some time to warm up the mountain.” Will suggests heading to Baldy around 10:30am and heading off for a good après ski around 3pm.

With regard to spring ski equipment, anything goes. (Though maybe not your big fatties for powder.) Will also suggests people wear layers. While the base of Baldy can feel almost balmy at 40 degrees, the top can be a brisk and windy 30 degrees. And, of course, make sure to always wear sun block, applying liberally at least twice a day.

If all goes well, Bald Mountain will stay open until April 13. If we are lucky, maybe even April 20th. It all depends on the condition of the snow and the activity on the hill. For more information, make sure to check the daily grooming report for the Groomer’s Special as well as the webcams on Plum.

Weekend Preview 03.27.08

Preview of the Snow 03.27
Ski season is slowly coming to an end. And, with fewer events, this weekend if the perfect time to relax, regroup and hit the slopes. For a complete schedule of events, check our calendar.

Thursday

If you haven’t made it there already, stop by the Elephant’s Perch on your way home from work for the 2008 Bicycle Preview Day. See the latest designs and accessories and get pumped for summer.

Friday

All winter long, we’ve laughed and laughed and laughed some more thanks to Sun Valley’s Winter Comedy Series. This weekend, the season comes to an end with a final show featuring Tish Sur and Leif Skyving. So head to the Boiler Room, grab a drink and get ready to laugh until you cry. Doors open 5:30pm.

Saturday

If you didn’t brave the elements and choose to compete in the Holding Cup, you can still show your support by watching the events on Bald Mountain. Or, get on the mountain yourself for one of the last Saturdays of the ski season. Stop by Warm Springs Lodge for a little R&R. Sip on a beer and listen to music by the Doo Wah Riders. For more music, head to Papa Hemi’s Hideway for local band, Four Stroke Bus at 6:30pm.

Sunday

Start the morning off right either by hitting the slopes as early a possible or with a leisurely brunch at Cristina’s. Enjoy Belgian waffles, mimosas and a fabulous assortment of eggs. (Though the bread alone is so good you almost don’t need to order anything else.) Then treat yourself to a matinee at Magic Lantern. We recommend 21, based on the best-selling book, Bringing Down the House. You’ll almost wish you were in Vegas. Almost.

This Week on Channel 13

As ski season comes to end, so does Plum's signature show, MorningNoon&Night. With just three weeks left, we have a lot of fabulous guests to fit into the show. This Saturday learn about spring ski deals from John Evans and hear about the Soldier Mountain Allstars Cheerleading Group. On Sunday, we have Mary Fauth from Girls on the Run as well as Joy Kasputys who will discuss upcoming plans for Warm Springs Ranch. As always get your daily weather from Fresh Tracks starting at 8am on Friday and 7:30am on Saturday and Sunday.

Caught the action on film? Send your photos to Plum.
