Good to know:

  • In 1939, Sun Valley was established as the nation's first ski resort.
  • The elevation on the top of Baldy is 9,150.
  • The elevation of the city of Ketchum is 5,880.
  • For every 100 females in Sun Valley, there are 116.2 males.
  • Sun Valley has been home to celebrities such as Ernest Hemingway, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks and Demi Moore.

Skiing Season:

Bald Mountain traditionally opens Thanksgiving Day and usually stays open until April, weather permitting. The peak of the season is around the holidays, which can get really busy. Spring skiing can be an absolute dream: fresh corn, warm weather, and not a whole lot of people.

Getting Around Town:

The Wood River Valley has amazing bus services running between Bellevue in the south all the way to Ketchum in the north. The Peak Bus will take you between cities for about a buck, and the KART Bus in Ketchum is Free. If you’re planning on skiing or going up north, rent a car. It’s just easier and probably cheaper in the long run. Cabs are difficult unless you are stumbling out of a bar at 2 a.m. on Main Street. Taxis are often waiting at the airport but they go fast. If you want one, call ahead.

Conveniences:

Going to the Post Office is an adventure in itself – kind of like a must do activity. It is located on Fourth Street and 2nd Avenue with normal United States Postal Service hours. Along with a full-service pharmacy, Chateau Drug offers an enormous selection of goods: shampoo, baby shoes, sleds, tools, kitchen appliances. Costumers can also purchase fish and game licenses here. If you need something dry-cleaned, do it well in advance. Sun Valley Cleaners is located in Ketchumand there is a laundromat right next to Grumpy’s on Warm Springs Road. Wash your clothes and drink a schooner of beer while you wait. And note, besides Tully’s and Starbucks, there are no big name chain stores in Sun Valley. So shop Mom and Pop and support our community.

If you need police or emergency assistance, contact the Ketchum Police Station. For medical services, contact St. Lukes Hospital, which is just South of Ketchum.
