Castle Rock Fire by the Numbers

We all know the firefighters are working hard. But not everyone knows how much fuel their bodies require on a daily basis. Here’s a quick look at a day in the life of a firefighter, by the numbers.

  • 14 average hours of a firefighter’s shift
  • 600 pounds of scrambled eggs consumed at breakfast on 8/25/07
  • 450 pounds of sausage consumed at breakfast on 8/26/07
  • 2,400 salisbury steaks consumed at dinner on 8/25/07
  • 90 gallons of gravy consumed at dinner on 8/25/07
  • 3,000 calories in a MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) provided to fighters who camp by the fire
  • 7,000 average calories consumed by a firefighter each day

The Castle Rock Fire has devastated the area in and around the Wood River Valley. Here is Plum’s numerical breakdown as of Thursday August 30.

  • 48 states and territories including Puerto Rico sent help
  • 48,520 Acres covered by the Castle Rock Fire
  • 100% of the fire is contained
  • 1,800 people evacuated from south of Ketchum
  • 89 meals served at the Red Cross Shelter in Hailey on 8/27/07
  • 200,000 acres to be reseeded by Governor Otter for regeneration
  • 18 miles of hardline that need to be built around the fire
  • 1,087 firefighting personnel in the area
  • 200 number of locals who toured basecamp on 8/26/07
  • 14.9 million dollars spent as of 8/30/07
  • 7,358 residences threatened
  • 0 structures damaged or destroyed
  • 0 fatalities
