Earth Bytes: Baby Food

Homemade baby food.
Baby Food Picture

Here’s some food for thought: homemade baby food is ecological, economical and a whole lot healthier for you and your tyke. Make your own meals and eliminate herbicides, pesticides and fungicides that can work their way into processed baby food. Get the lowdown in this week’s Earth Byte.

  • Economical: The average baby eats 600 jars of baby food in his/her first year, totaling roughly $300. Homemade food rings in at as little as $55 a year (depending on the specific foods used and whether or not they’re organic).
  • Ecological: Storing homemade baby food in reusable containers eliminates excess packaging waste (plastic, glass, metal and paper).
  • Efficient: If you’ve got 30 minutes a week, you’ve got the time. Steam, puree, cool and store pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, peas and more. If you’re on the run, puree a banana and serve.
