We’ve all done it. (Or, at least we’ve all wanted to do it at some point in our hiking career.) You’re out on the trail, having a good time, hiking around and your dog goes number two. You know you are supposed to take your plastic sack, pick up that mess and dispose of it in the neatly placed dog-waste cans. But the idea of carrying that thing another two miles sounds awful, and so sometimes, you just might look the other way.

Now, you can atone for your dog and yourself by joining Community's first annual Canine Clean Sweep on Thursday May 1. The ERC in conjunction with Hound Around LLC, Dogs Play ‘n Train, The Pet Nanny, the Elephant’s Perch and The Animal Shelter are sponsoring a massive trail clean up. The idea is to protect our rivers and streams (as well as our noses and shoes) before the summer begins.

Not only does dog waste look disgusting, it is also a serious environmental and health issue. For one, it contributes to water pollution by running into our rivers and pounds. Additionally, dog waste also contains fecal coliform, salmonella, strep and giardia, all of which can cause serious illnesses in humans. For the health of the trails and the people of the Wood River Valley, locals are being asked to donate just a few hours of their time this Thursday. Bags and gloves will be provided. Please bring your own shovel. The clean up begins at 5:30pm at the following trailheads:

Adams Gulch -The Elephant’s Perch
Trail Creek - Environmental Resource Center
Lake Creek –East side of the highway – The Pet Nanny
Carbonate – Mark Acker of Sawtooth Animal Center
Colorado Gulch – Hound Around LLC
