Not the best thing to hear from the announcer at a rodeo. Especially when he’s talking not to the bull rider, but rather the crowd because a bucking bull just barged through the arena’s fence.
Just goes to show that anything can happen at "Idaho’s Wildest Rodeo”. The rodeo is held every June in the small town of Mackay, Idaho. It includes everything from cow tipping to bull riding to wild cow milking, a personal favorite.
This endeavor requires not one, but two cowboys. One lassos the cow, the other to stand in the dirt, milking the bucking animal. The first person to run the milk to the table of judges wins. Sometimes, there is no milking to be done as the cowboy is simply dragged around the arena, hanging onto his rope for dear life.
In short, the Mackay Idaho Rodeo is a complete riot. The arena is always packed. The beer is fabulously cheap (with cans of Coors selling for a $1). The sponsors vary from family oriented Amy Lou’s Steakhouse to a strip joint. The DJ plays music that includes country classics as well as Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”. And the extraordinary 2000 pound bulls have anything but ordinary names: D’Angelo, Stick Sweet, and Whip Saw.
Even without the rodeo, Mackay is worth a stop. It’s home to the highest peak in Idaho, Mt. Borah. If you’re no mountaineer nor rodeo connoisseur, just the drive on Trail Creek Road is worth it. It's wise to bring an spare tire, since there’s a segment of rocky road that can be a bit rough.
