The Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning writer was one of the first celebrities to be invited to America’s first ski resort , the Sun Valley Resort, in 1936.
Hemingway first came to the valley in 1939. Ernest was given suite 206 in the Sun Valley Lodge, where he stayed often. There, he worked on his novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. He also spent a good amount of time socializing at his favorite restaurant, Christiania, and in the tavern, The Casino.
Ultimately, the area became his refuge from the outside world. Here, he could write in the mornings and hunt in the afternoons. In 1958, he made a permanent residence in the Wood River Valley with his fourth wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway. In later years, he worked on A Moveable Feast and The Garden of Eden. He also wrote a short story based on hunting in Sun Valley called The Shot.
Hemingway passed away in his Ketchum home in July 1961, He and his wife Mary are buried in the Ketchum cemetery next to each other. There are also pictures of the Hemingway family vacationing in Sun Valley in the Sun Valley lodge as well as the last letter he wrote before he died.
To honor this literary giant, the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber and Visitors Bureau with guidance from the Hemingway family foundation is holding its third annual Ernest Hemingway Festival.
“Hemingway in Paris” will run from September 20- 23 and is sponsored by Zions Bank. For more details check out the Chamber’s wesbite.
