Patricelli Paints Sun Valley

Though the Gallery Walk was officially cancelled due to the Castle Rock Fire that didn’t stop galleries from showing off their art. One new player on the scene was Iconoclast Books showcasing books and large acrylics by Wood River Valley resident and children’s illustrator, Leslie Patricelli.Leslie Patricelli knows kids. Not only does she have three of her own, all of whom are under the age of ten, she is an accomplished children’s book illustrator who just gets it. Her books are simple and to the point, breaking down into the opposites of a child’s world. Think books titled, “Yummy, yucky,” and “Big, little”. Her books are teaching the basics: “Worms are yucky. Spaghetti is yummy.”Originally from Seattle, Patricelli has always done cartoon drawings. It used to be a simple hobby, something she doodled to entertain herself and her friends while in college and majoring in communications. Then ten years ago, before she and her husband had three little ones of their own, Patricelli started to do illustrations. In fact, she wrote her first board book, “Yummy Yucky”, on her parents’ couch in Sun Valley. She now has a series of board books, a new large illustrated book called “The Birthday Box,” complete with wrapping paper, and another series is on the way.In addition to producing fabulous children’s books, Patricelli also has her original paintings up for sale. They are lively, colorful, and charming and, they are displayed on the walls of Iconoclast Books in Ketchum. While the final products are acrylic, her pictures all start on a computer. Patricelli uses Adobe Illustrator not only to draw her charming characters, but also to select colors and have them approved by her publisher. Then, using a full-scale pdf, Patricelli transfers her creation to a large acrylic painting, which takes at least eight solid hours of work.Needless to say, all her work, board books and large acrylics are quite yummy.
