What It Takes To Be Queen

Beauty pageants have never been easy. With the talent show, the evening gowns, the interview (not to mention the swimsuit contest), it takes way more than just looking pretty.

But Hailey's "Days of the Old West Rodeo" queen contest adds a whole other twist: not only must you be intelligent and pretty, you’ve gotta be a darn good cowgirl.

This week, at least six young women will compete for three titles: senior queen, teen queen, and junior queen. All will be judged in three categories: appearance, personality, and horsemanship.

The competition begins on July 2nd with freestyle reigning as pre-rodeo entertainment at 6:30 p.m. Each contestant can choose her own pattern, music, and costume. The goal is simply to win the crowd; especially since this year the judges are the rodeo attendees.

Then, on July 3rd the women step out of the arena and onto the dance floor of Grange Hall. There, they will be judged on poise, personality, and looks. The girls must model, give a speech of about 3-4 minutes answering the question; “If you could choose any lifestyle what would it be and why?” They must also go through a personality interview as well as a series of impromptu questions concerning current events and rodeo etiquette. In this more formal setting, they must also wear prairie skirts or a dress along with hats and boots.

That same day, around 2pm the girls will re-enter the rodeo arena for the horsemanship competition. Each age group is assigned a different pattern. Later that evening, around 6:30, these potential rodeo queens will entertain the rodeo crowd.

Finally, on July 4th, a queen for each category will be crowned just before the rodeo.
