The 4th of July is all about good old-fashioned celebrating – and the Wood River Valley turns out for a tradition that is as American as barbeque and apple pie.
Fire sirens blare, rodeo queens wave, high school bands jam, and local politicians ride down Main Street on horseback. There are homemade floats, old Model T Fords, dogs, Smokey the Bear, and Plum’s very first parade entry: the “Smile You’re on Plum TV” truck complete with kids, Plum treats, and a crew filming the crowd.
After the parade, people cool off at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts annual ice cream social held at the birthplace of Ezra Pound. At Hop Porter Park, folks line up for traditional bbq fare while kids splash in the sprinklers.
This year also marks the start of a new tradition: Ketchum’s “4th on Fourth”. The Fourth Street project is finally complete with new walking corridors and an installation of sculpture. From 4 - 10 p.m. enjoy a carnival for kids with food, music, and activities.
The celebration ends with Hailey “Old Days of the West” rodeo and spectacular fireworks that can be seen just about anywhere in the Wood River Valley.
