Welcome back to Verbatim. This week we hear from Andrea Wills. Wills splits her time between London and New York, if you can imagine jumping the pond that often, with winter and summer trips to Sun Valley.
Musical chairs
The players always outnumber the places.
Move round the circle. Sit. Repeat.
Remove a chair, leave the empty spaces.
Look at flushed and eager faces,
Hear the quick staccato taps of feet -
The players always outnumber the places.
Each heart squeezes, pumps and races.
The jarring lack of music – Lose. Retreat.
Remove a chair, leave the empty spaces.
They stand, those the game displaces -
Disenchanted, lonely in defeat.
The players always outnumber the places.
They’re gone except for ghost-like traces,
But the song maintains a steady beat.
Remove a chair, leave the empty spaces.
This is a dance with no embraces.
When we die, the game will be complete.
The players always outnumber the places.
Remove a chair, leave the empty spaces.
